Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a joint agreement today to combat customs offenses in 2010-2011.

The document was signed in Tbilisi by Georgian Deputy Finance Minister Irakli Siradze and Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Deputy Asker Abdullayev.

The purpose of the document is to exchange information on violations in the customs sphere, and develop and implement effective joint actions to combat customs violations.

The sides noted that the existence of such agreement will improve administration functionality of the Georgian-Azerbaijani border, which will facilitate the work of importers and exporters.

Siradze said that is the first time when Georgia draws such a plan with one of its neighbors.

"We are confident that approved joint actions will considerably improve the situation on the border and facilitate the entrepreneurs' work," Siradze said.

Abdullayev said the joint actions will solve many problems in the customs sphere.

"We attach special importance to combating drug trafficking, as in 2009 we were able to stop the delivery of 320 kilograms of drugs from Azerbaijan to Georgia, which were going to Europe," Abdullayev said.
